Sorption: A Statistical Thermodynamic Fluctuation Theory

Can the sorption mechanism be proven by fitting an isotherm model to experiment? Such a question arises because (i) multiple models, with different assumptions on mechanisms, often fit experimental equally well, (ii) some models [such as Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) and Guggenheim–Anderson–de Boer (GAB)] isotherms that do not satisfy underlying of model, (iii) (such Oswin Peleg) are empirical equations have well-defined basis mechanisms. To overcome these difficulties, we propose universal route elucidating directly from isotherm, without based statistical thermodynamic fluctuation theory. We shown how sorbate–sorbate interaction depends activity is key understanding mechanism. Without assuming adsorption sites planar layers, can derived, which contains Langmuir, BET, GAB its special cases. constructed approach applicable absorption, solid liquid sorbents, vapor sorbates demonstrated efficacy using humidity sucrose both sides.
